Third Graders at Lansing Elementary School began studying issues involving water around the world, including access, drought, and pollution. In read-aloud, they read A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, about an 11-year-old girl, named Nya, living in South Sudan who has to spend most of her days walking to get water for her family until a well is built in her village. Their class will write letters to Nya expressing their reactions to her story. Children tried their hands at carrying water using Nepali water jugs from Nepal Water Boxes borrowed from the Einaudi Center’s Lending Library.
Southworth Library’s Family and Reading Discussion Group pairs books with culture kits from the Einaudi Center’s Lending Library. Children ages 8-12 and their parents examine literature through the lens of “bravery, tolerance/bullies and friendship/loyalty.” In their program this week on Malala-A Brave Girl from Pakistan/Iqbal-A Brave Boy from Pakistan by Jeannette Winter, kids integrated the story of Malala and Iqbal with materials from the Lending Library’s Pakistan Culture Kit, including henna stamps, school uniforms, toys and other ephemera. Diane Pamel, director of Southworth Library stated, “We usually use some cross-cultural books and love looking at the materials in the kits to complement them. The kids love to be able to actually see and handle things rather than just hearing about them or looking at pictures.” In the past Southworth has used culture kits from China (In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson) and Central and Eastern Europe (Gleam and Glow) to enrich their discussion series.
